Chapter 15

A mangled old hand reached out to take Jerry’s ticket.

“We’re not going in just yet,” Jerry said. “But I know these two guys are ready to go in.”

Jerry stepped aside so Ronny and Chip could pass by.

The Douglas brothers gave him a dirty look but Jerry could sense their fear. Perhaps they’d been bluffing all along, he thought. It served them right -- a taste of their own medicine. They were making fun of kids who were crying after all. Now it was time to see who was tough or not.

The dark hood turned in Ronny’s direction.

“You then,” spoke the hood with mild disgust. “You got a ticket, or are you just scratching around here like a baby chicken too?”

Ronny felt the icy tip of a bony finger as it tapped his breast bone. Blood-red eyes studied his face expectantly but he refused to look for long. He quickly pulled out the exact number of tickets he and his brother needed and dropped them into the worm-eaten palm.

“He’s really scary,” Cindy whispered into Jerry’s ear. “I can’t believe how good a makeup job that guy’s got.”

“What makes you think it’s makeup?” Jerry shivered.

Other kids approached the gate and gave the man their tickets. Only a few decided to bail out at the last possible moment. However, most of those waiting joined Ronny and Mark on the other side of the gate next to a tombstone that appeared to shift as if something might be pushing it up from below.

Jerry, Cindy and Mark watched as the man took the last of the tickets. He then slammed the brittle gate behind him and latched it with a piece of rope. Like fog, the fresh group of customers drifted out of the man’s way as he passed through them and began to lead the way. Ronny and Chip turned and waved before they became completely swallowed by shadow.

It seemed like it took them forever to get to the lantern hanging from the tree in front of the house. At this distance away, Ronny and Chip looked like blurry little figures about to enter a witch’s house to be eaten.

“I don’t know about this,” Mark said gravely. “I don’t trust that guy who takes the tickets.”

“That’s just part of the act,” Jerry said.

“But what about the book with the list?” Mark insisted. “That place is built with stuff from some really bad places.”

“We’ll be fine,” Jerry said hollowly. “If it gets really bad in there, we can always use Cindy’s flashlight to find our way out.”

“That’s not all I brought,” Cindy said. She pulled Jed’s book out from under her shirt to show them. “I thought this might come in handy. Maybe we can try and identify some things inside the house. Find out for sure if this book is a fake or not.”

Great, Mark thought, my cousin is going to turn this into a field trip. I knew she was weird.

“So you’re mom doesn’t know you took it?” Jerry asked.

Cindy shook her head as she hid the book again under her shirt.
